Pattaya Fishing Park 26th March
Another marathon day at Pattaya Fishing Park with 18 Mekong giant catfish landed, 3 of which were around the 20-25kg mark and one of 25-30kg. I could have had more if it wasn’t for line breakages. Seems 45lb line still isn’t strong enough for these big fish. I’ve never seen PFP fish as fast as it did today, I’m guessing because it’s low season in Pattaya the fish are getting rather hungry.
Baetong 23/03/2014
Having never pulled a Mekong giant catfish out of Baetong I thought I’d try the the big fish set-up I usually use at Pattaya Fishing Park. A cage type feeder running free on 45lb main line, a strong swivel and 60lb braid tied onto a size 16 Gamakatsu hook. This seemed to work well for small sawai, others were having success floating bread on the surface. After dark the best technique seemed to be to use a float with the feeder set to about 75cm. In the 5 hour afternoon/evening session I landed 9 striped catfish weighing between 2Kg and 8Kg, the Mekongs remain elusive.

Ngao Nam 5th March
Having browsed a few websites and read reports of Mekong giant catfish of up to 140Kg, we thought we would head to Bangkok to try and catch some. We left Pattaya about 9am and after a minor navigational cock-up that had us driving through central Bangkok, arrived at Ngao Nam just before 11.30. The lake is an impressive size, I’m guessing at about 75 metres x 600 metres. It’s ฿150 to fish here and the lake is open 24 hours a day. One of the guides helped us choose and mix the bait, it’s quite expensive at Ngao Nam and cost around ฿750 for two of us for the day.
The fishing started out quite slow but picked up mid-afternoon after we switched from fishing on the bottom to using floats. I ended the day with 3 Mekongs all around 15Kg, my friend landed 7 the largest of which was around 23Kg and twice broke off using 30lb line. The average size of Mekongs landed that day was rather disappointing, I understand they lost a lot of fish in the 2011 floods but I was expecting to see a few decent sized fish come out. If anyone is interested in fishing this place the location is: 13.74599 N, 100.37266 E.
