Wasana Fishing Park 31st August 2022

Amazon red tail catfish

Having been out of Thailand for nearly four years, I was excited to fish Wasana Fishing Park at it’s new location. The setting is idyllic, the fishing park is a flooded quarry with high tree lined walls of rock most of the way around. The location is great, very quiet but only a few kilometres from central Pattaya.

I started the day with an Amazon red tail catfish of around 10kg, it put up a good fight. This was quickly followed by another of around 15kg. There then followed two Siamese carp. The fishing then slowed for me around lunchtime. Mid afternoon it started raining and the fishing picked up, I landed another Siamese and three more Amazon red tails in less than an hour. One of the red tails put up a huge fight, it pulled so hard I thought I had a 20kg fish on the line, it turned out to be only about 10kg. I ended the day with three more Siamese carp, the biggest was well known to the owner and had previously been weighed at 52lb.

The water quality appeared excellent, speaking to the owner, he tests the water every day and works hard to keep all the levels correct. All the fish appeared healthy and up for a good fight. Tally for the day was 1 rohu, 1 tilapia, 5 Amazon red tail catfish and 6 Siamese carp.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to fish the new Wasana Fishing Park before the official opening. This looks set to be a cracking little park with a wide variety of species, good sized fish and excellent value for money. The first fish I hooked into was most likely a Mekong, it stripped line from my reel slowly but powerfully. I cranked up the drag, straightened the hook lost the fish. Next was an Amazon red tail catfish, they always put up a good fight. The fish kept biting steadily throughout the day.

I ended the day with 4 Amazon red tail catfish, possibly the second largest on the scales at 11kg, 2 spotted sorubim both around 5kg, 3 walking catfish largest around 3kg, 3 common carp largest around 2.5kg, 3 striped catfish/Mekong catfish crosses largest approx 1.5kg, 1 Siamese carp on the scales at 8.5kg, 1 rohu approx 1 kg, 1 tambaqui around 7 or 8 kg, 1 small Nile tilapia. And that little lot before the park is fully stocked. Unfortunately for me the arapaimas and Jullien’s golden carp remained elusive. I will publish full details on this new park in next few days.

A cracking day at Fishoholics

6.4kg Asian red tail catfish

As it had been a cold night before I wasn’t expecting a great days fishing but I was pleasantly surprised. The day started quite slowly with a catla carp of around 5kg. I then caught my first Asian red tail catfish which tipped the scales at 6.4kg. This was followed by a small Amazon red tail catfish of around 5kg and another bigger catla carp of around 7kg.

By late afternoon the fishing was getting faster. I hooked into another Amazon red tail which put up a huge fight, unfortunately we didn’t weigh it but I guess it was around 10-12kg. This was followed by a small arapaima of maybe 10kg. I was told by the owner that this was the smallest arapaima in the lake. The day ended with another Amazon red tail catfish of around 8kg. All in all a cracking day with several very small Nile tilapia and silver barb, 3 Amazon red tail catfish, 2 catla carp, 1 Asian red tail catfish and 1 arapaima.

I highly recommend Fishoholics, it’s a great place to stay for a few days with good food, clean rooms and great fishing and it’s all very reasonably priced.

Another great day at the new Bungsamran

38kg Mekong catfish

Another great day at the new Bungsamran. With the assistance of a friend who has fished Bungsamran a lot and recommended using light tackle I set up a PE6 rod with a large fixed spool reel and 35lb monofilament. I started with a Mekong on the scales at 38kg, followed by another on the scales at 35.5kg. I then got dragged most of the length of the pier by an even bigger Mekong, unfortunately we were nowhere near the scales when we hauled it out but I’m guessing it was somewhere around 45kg. I followed these with two more Mekongs over 30kg and two more in the low 20kg range. Sometime after the 5th Mekong I landed a Siamese carp which weighed in at 12.5kg. The way to catch at Bungsamran at the moment seems to be lighter gear and longer rods to enable longer casts, long mono hook links, feeder set deep and casting towards the middle of the lake. There were no close in fights like at old Bungsamran, all the fish headed out towards deep water. Do not leave your tackle or bags unattended. I saw a couple of locals trying the locks on several of the nets chained up on the pier.

3.5kg rohu

My first day at the new Bungsamran fishing park. As there were no bread skins I started off using rice husks. First fish landed was a Mekong giant catfish of around 22kg. I landed 5 more Mekongs all above 20kg, the largest around 28kg (62 lb). Late afternoon I switched to breadcrumbs and landed three small Siamese carp, the largest weighed in at 4.3kg. I also caught two rohu, the largest tipped the scales at 3.5kg. The rohu and Siamese carp would have been great fun on light tackle but I was tooled up for Mekongs so they were very easily reeled in. A friend caught a 14kg Amazon red tail catfish which put up a good scrap despite being caught on some very strong tackle. A promising start for the new Bungsamran.
